Many of us have heard that cats always land on their feet. Have you ever wondered why they land on their feet? Well there are a few factors that play a role in how cats land. First of all, cats have a vestibular apparatus in their ear which is used like a compass in their body. When a cat is dropped it recognizes which way is down, then it rotates its body to face the landing spot.
The height of the fall also contributes to the cats landing. A syndrome called the high-rise syndrome, has proven that greater distances help a cat land on their feet compared to shorter distances. This may occur because cats go through different stages when they land. So with a greater distance the cat can go through all the stages, increasing the likelihood that they will land on their feet.
